  • Transition Care

    We could tell you to never repot immediately…but that wouldn’t be honest. We repot many of our plants the day they arrive.

    We’re not trying to convince you to wait two weeks.

    We’re trying to help you understand the tradeoff. Every major change makes it a little harder to understand what your plant is responding to.

  • Acclimation

    Each plant has a finite energy budget that’s divided between maintenance, growth, and recovery.

     

    During acclimation, that energy is redistributed to match the conditions of its new environment. As a result, a plant may prioritize root growth over new leaves, slow its growth, or shed older leaves while it adjusts.

  • Watering & Root Health

    Healthy roots are responsible for absorbing the water and nutrients a plant needs to grow. Fine feeder roots do most of that work, making them especially important after shipping or repotting. Think of the root system like your home’s plumbing: if the supply line is damaged, turning on the faucet harder won’t fix the problem. In the same way, a newly repotted plant may droop because damaged feeder roots can’t move water efficiently—not because it necessarily needs more water.

    For roots to keep doing their job, they also need oxygen. When the spaces between substrate particles stay filled with water for too long, oxygen becomes limited. As roots lose access to oxygen, they begin to decline, reducing the plant’s ability to absorb water and creating conditions where root rot can develop.

  • Lighting & Environment

    Every plant has an energy budget, and light is where that budget comes from. Green tissue contains chlorophyll, which captures light and converts it into energy. You can think of every green leaf as a collection of solar panels. The more energy a plant produces, the more it has available for growth, recovery, and maintenance.

    Variegated plants naturally have fewer “solar panels” because the white, yellow, or pink portions contain little to no chlorophyll. That means they generally have a smaller energy budget to work with. When light becomes limited, plants adjust how they spend that energy. They may produce smaller leaves, stretch toward available light, or slow their growth as they adapt to their environment.

  • Propagation

    Every propagation method starts at a different stage of development. Tissue cultures, corms, cuttings, and established plants each have different root systems, energy reserves, and care requirements. As a plant establishes, it becomes better equipped to recover from stress and adapt to its environment.
